Milan Curriculum Maps

In the Milan Area School District we have worked hard to articulate our curriculum and align our instruction to the Michigan Curriculum grade level and high school content standards. Our curriculum mapping website, Milan Curriculum Maps , offers our community the opportunity to access our curriculum maps for classes and courses taught in the district. The district uses a process called curriculum mapping to aid in the implementation of district and state curriculum, instruction, and assessment. “Curriculum Mapping” is a calendar-based method of organizing and planning what is happening in district classrooms at specific points during the school year. Teachers develop maps of the content that needs to be taught, the skills that need development, essential questions that frame their units and the assessments to determine successful learning.

Letter from the Assistant Superintendent

Milan Area Schools is dedicated to the revision, implementation, and monitoring of the district curriculum in all content areas. Over the last nine years Milan has revised every content area, purchased new materials, and aligned our curriculum to Michigan Department of Education Standards and Benchmarks. We have continued to update our curriculum to address the new Grade Level Content Expectations, High School Content Expectations and Graduation Requirements set forth by the Michigan Department of Education. We continually analyze the curriculum provided to our students and make necessary changes to offer our students a quality education.

The staff at Milan Area Schools has been using an electronic tool to map the curriculum they implement in their classrooms. This tool allows us to monitor the operational curriculum and identify gaps or repetition in our curriculum. By using this tool, the curriculum committees can make informed decisions regarding the revision of a particular content area.

We implemented a new testing program called, Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) by Northwest Evaluation Association during the 2006-2007 school year. The data we collect with this test is used to determine individual student achievement and to help focus our instruction to better meet the needs of our students. We will continue to use this tool in the years to come.

The science curriculum was reviewed over the last few years and many pilot materials and state curriculum documents were used during the 2006-2007 school year to determine our sequence of study. We will implement a new district science curriculum beginning in 2007-2008 school year and will continue to implement new curriculum at various levels through the 2009-2010 school year. This curriculum will align with the new content expectations and address the needs of our students with respect to the high school graduation requirements and the Michigan Merit Curriculum. We have been working to revise our English Language Arts Curriculum since the start of the 2007 school year. In addition to the ELA revision, we began to look at technology instruction at Milan Area Schools. Our goal is to develop and provide an environment where students can feel connected with the technology they use everyday and what they are learning at school.

We will continue to offer the students in Milan up-to-date curriculum and provide the materials necessary to implement the curriculum effectively.
